New Laptop Part 2

Well I've sorta got my laptop the way I want it however I'm having a little trouble with vista (watches all the people who commented on me becoming a fan of vista on facebook smile... jokes on you, i trolled your arses). Don't get me wrong, I think vista has potential, it's got some pretty damn cool features. The instant search on the start menu is damn handy... But this post isn't about Vista (that post will come). This post is about my new laptop and how it's going.

The first thing I'm noticing is the batter life, my old laptop had a 9 cell battery, the M1530 XPS series dosen't have a 9 cell option, which is a little irritating, but I'm not missing the weight. Now for the good parts of the new laptop

  • Cooling - This is my favourite change, so far, on a clear desk, I'm struggling to overheat the laptop while gaming. There's none of the noticable CPU throttling I had with the old one, which means so far I've been able to make do without a laptop cooler
  • Dual headphone sockets - This has already come in handy once and I reckon it will again. It's a pretty good idea
  • Funky buttons for media - The same kind of button as my new monitor, those touch buttons. Pretty nice and easy use
  • Included mini remote - This works really nicely, works with the built in IR receiver which is nice. The larger one that came with the lappy doesn't work with the built in IR it needs an external usb one... Big chunky ugly thing...
  • HDMI - Usefull I'm sure... Not really for me at the moment but I'm sure it would be...

And there are some let downs of course

  • It's showing more fingerprints than my car was after it was dusted for fingerprints...
  • The surface around the touchpad collects sweat when things get a bit warm
  • Also no gigabit ethernet... Seriously dell, what the hell... Your "studio" laptop has gigabit ethernet, but your XPS (high end performance notebook) dosen't...

Anyway, I'll post more stuff when it breaks or whatever. The hard drive occasionally clicks so I'm a little concerned about backups at the moment... Also the slot load drive has given me trouble at times.

Say no to Clean Feed…

Well it seems Clean Feed is slowly, quietly, gaining momentum. So it's time to help out a No Clean Feed and try to give that movement a bit of steam as well. So I urge you all to do the following

  • Write to your local newspaper, and the major ones
I've done it, it's not hard, it really doesn't take that long for you to type up a simple 200 ish word letter to the editor of a newspaper and email it. That's what I did, and it's possible it might be getting published. If it does I'll let you know where and I'll also put it up here, well, I'll put it up here anyway later!
  • Write to Senator Conroy and to your local Member
This really isn't hard either, I strongly recommend going to the No Clean Feed website and checking out the section on how to gain the attention of your local member. Write them a letter, sign it and post it to the address's listed on the sites linked to by No Clean Feed
  • Print off posters and put them everywhere
This is another thing I'm doing with the help of some mates at Swinburne. We've printed out alot of A4 B&W ones and left them lying around but there's some really nice A3 Colour ones on noticeboards around the place

The posters we printed off are like this (click on the image for the full size one) broken

It prints off real nice as an A3 page. I'm gonna design some other banners and stuff as well! So get active people, even though many of you think this is crazy, and I personally don't think it will get through, we need to do something about it to let the government know that this really is not on, and dare I say it, is VERY Un-Australian!

No Clean Feed…

Well, I saw this in a few places and didn't pay much attention... But seeing as though it has a centralised website I've decided to push it as much as I can.

Basically the government has been planning for some time a filter which would be by default on. By default things like porn and swearing and anything considered unsafe for children would be blocked. Now this isn't too bad, those of us that want access to such things can simply switch it off.

However, now it seems that the government has begun suggesting a FORCED illegal websites filter. My question is, what are they going to decide is illegal. Not to mention the fact that once the filter is there they could block as much as they wanted. We need to stop this now, even if you don't think anything is going to happen start doing things now. And ramp it up if they officially announce that there's going to be a forced filter.

In the meantime please write to your local ministers and let them know this is REALLY NOT ON! And check out this site!
